Hurricane Preparedness Information – By Villages Sumter Marion Insurance

June 5th, 2013

hurricane_prepare.jpg.w300h290The Villages Fl – This information is directly from an article that was published in The Villages Voice a bulletin that the Villages Homeowners Association prepares every month.   This is great information about being prepared for hurricanes.  Since hurricane season started June 1st this is very timely information.   We are supplying this information directly from The Villages Voice bulletin since we feel it is so important to be prepared.

Hurricane – Season to Prepare

By Sumter – Marion Ins

Hurricane – Season to Prepare

Football season, holiday season, love bug season – what does hurricane season have in common with the other “seasons”? Football and holiday seasons are cause for family gatherings and celebration. Love bug season is a gathering of another sort – clumps of bothersome black flying bugs everywhere! So how does hurricane season fit in? They all require preparation: whether it is planning parties, shopping for gifts, protecting your car or stocking up on food and water. Being prepared for any season makes life a little easier and in the case of hurricane season can literally save your life. In continuance of last month’s article, I am offering a few more tidbits of advice that will hopefully make your life a little easier should a storm come our way.

There is information you need to know and things you need to have in place before the storm hits. Evacuation routes; do you know at least two – three ways out of your neighborhood and city? What about shelters? You will need at least 3 days worth of food and water.  It is recommended by the American Red Cross that you supply at least 1 gallon of water per person per day. A few more items to add to your hurricane kit: whistles (so people can hear you call for help), wet wipes (hygiene) and a camera (document damage after the storm). First aid kits are also an essential part of your hurricane kit.

This is also a good time to review your home insurance policy. Check over your coverage and deductible amounts. If you have valuable items in your home such as jewelry or artwork you may want to discuss scheduling them onto your policy. It would also be worthwhile to inquire about flood insurance if you do not already have a flood policy in effect. Flood insurance is relatively inexpensive but there is a 30 day wait for current homeowners. Contact your insurance agent regarding any questions or concerns you have regarding your home insurance policy now, changes to your policy cannot be made once a hurricane watch/warning has been issued.

Okay, so now you are prepared if a storm hits.  What do you do once a warning has been issued? If you own a vehicle make sure your gas tank is full.  If you do not own a car make arrangements for transportation in case you need to evacuate. For those that own smart phones, there are hurricane apps available for download; apps to help prepare and guide you through a storm. Red Cross has an app that will help you notify friends and family of your status during a storm. Be sure to have cash on hand and verify your credit card limits. If you have pets you will need a plan for them as well. If you need to leave your home, turn off your electricity, water and gas if possible and leave a note in your home stating where you have gone in case friends or family come looking for you.

Hurricane season opened June 1st and runs through November 30th.  I cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared this and every hurricane season. Although I have been to some great hurricane parties, hurricanes are certainly nothing to celebrate. We will leave the celebrating to some of those other seasons and use this season to help us get organized and prepare. Preparation is the key to survival: before, during and after the storm.

The Villages Fl – Largest Active Adult Community In The World!

June 4th, 2013

villages fl sign

Each neighborhood in The Villages Fl has a name like “Sanibel”, “Tall Trees”, “Virginia Trace”, etc. and each is home to on average around 100 homes to 1,550 homes.   There are close to 100 different villages that make up the overall development.  Some of the newer neighborhoods are named after actual counties in Florida such as “Collier”, “Hernando”, etc.    Creating these smaller neighborhoods within this giant development helps residents immediately identify the area they live in.   When asked where a “villager” lives they will immediately respond by proudly naming the neighborhood or village in which they reside.    There’s a sense of belonging and it helps to immediately pinpoint their location to fellow residents.

The Villages Fl is the largest active adult community in the world!  Most people visit The Villages to sample the lifestyle before buying and rent a home for a short period of time.   For The Villages rentals most people will turn to by owner websites like VillagesHomes4Rent.Com!

Morse Blvd South of 466A In The Villages Fl

May 14th, 2013

The Villages Fl – If you head South on Morse Blvd from 466A it doesn’t take you long before you run out of pavement. Even though Buena Vista Blvd allows Villagers to drive from 466A to Brownwood and 44 in Wildwood, Morse Blvd is still not completed.

There are signs cautioning you not to proceed further since it’s a construction site. There are some cars that will sneak around the barrier to drive down to the end but from what I could tell the pavement stops shortly after the barrier so there really isn’t any reason to drive past the barrier.

If you do decide to drive past the barrier it does state that violators will be prosecuted so proceed at your own risk!   The circle where the barrier is posted shows the Village sign for Sanibel one of the new Villages South of 466A.  Across from Sanibel is a great little driving range where you can hit into the water.  There’s a little island green that reminded me of the recent Players Championship where Sergio Garcia hit two balls into the water letting Tiger Woods run away with the win.   You can pretend it’s you standing up there hitting to the island green and beating Tiger!   Right next to the driving range is a very large fire station which looks like will definately meet the needs of residents in that area of The Villages!
